Public Intervention and Performance

In August 17, 2014, Riza Manalo participated in the Sunday day-off gathering of the Filipino domestic workers in Kuala Lumpur. In this work, she examined the role of collective memory and identity in the transformation of a public space into a claimed temporary refuge and social outlet that alleviates feelings of displacement, disempowerment and discrimination. She utilized diasporic references, situations and mediation in her artistic process to analyse the various social groups, cultural practices and activities that claim and shape these public spaces into a temporary notion of place as "home away from home."

This project explored space, material and process in relation to memory, social body and transitional spaces.
